The tags are – you guessed it – the same targeted keywords that you identified in the first step. Think about back links as popularity votes, the more back links you have, the more credibility the search engines provide to your site. Creating back links used to take a lot of time, but now can be automated if you use WordPress and manage your content correctly which I will cover in a separate blog post. There are also ways to generate back links like writing articles, submitting to forums, posting on other blog sites and in general just spreading your website link around the web. Don’t get too carried away and start spamming link though.

Another thing to consider is the quality of your back links. Many SEO experts feel that the back links from just a few site with high page rank are worth more than a large number from lower ranked sites. One way to explain the quality of back links is that having 10 back links from sites that have very high page rank (PR6-PR10) is worth more than 100 back links from lower ranked sites (PR1-PR2).

But don’t just focus on page rank of the sites where you get the links. In fact you should mix the sites you target for back links from sites of all page rank because some sites will improve their ranking while others may lose their ranking. Like a well-rounded investment plan you should spread your links around to sites from all levels.
