If you have an online business, you should always be working to improve page rank and get top search engine ranking for your targeted keywords. The question of course is how do you get there? There are three key factors that help you improve your page rank to get top search engine positioning: keywords, website optimization and most importantly, back links.
Getting top search engine ranking takes a lot of knowledge and a lot of work. But there’s nothing really hard to do, it’s just following a proven process on a consistent basis. When I finally decided to learn all about search engine optimization and become diligent on doing all the things that I read on other sites, I started seeing results. So the lesson I finally learned – and one that I ask you to consider – is that if you want to build your business on search engine traffic, you better start following the process.
Most internet marketers understand that search engine optimization starts with keyword research because those are the phrases that optimize your website around. That may sound simple, but getting to point where you understand which phrases should be targeted is hard for many people. Most do not have a clue how how to get there and very few have the tools they need to do the research.
The second factor to improve page rank and get top search engine ranking is to make sure your website is well optimized. This means that you properly use the meta tags, you properly use header tags and you make your pages keyword relevant. In other words, on page optimization is nothing more than telling the search engines exactly what your website is all about. So every time you add a page or new blog post, you spend the necessary time in optimizing that page. But these first two factors are tightly intertwined and they have to work in concert with each other – selecting the right keywords and then following the process.
The third other factor in getting that first page rank is developing back links. This sounds scary to many people but actually is not that difficult, especially if you use WordPress for your blog. In a nutshell, back links are nothing more than other web site that provide links back to your website, using tags (sometimes called anchor tags). The tags are – you guessed it – the same targeted keywords that you identified in the first step. That’s why getting the targeted list of keywords is so important – they carry through everything else you do for search engine optimization.
The back links are a huge factor to improve page rank and get top search engine ranking for your targeted keywords. Think about back links as popularity votes, the more back links you have, the more credibility the search engines provide to your site. Creating back links used to take a lot of time, but now can be automated if you use WordPress and manage your content correctly which I will cover in a separate blog post. There are also ways to generate back links like writing articles, submitting to forums, posting on other blog sites and in general just spreading your website link around the web. Don’t get too carried away and start spamming link though.
Another thing to consider is the quality of your back links. Many seo experts feel that the back links from just a few site with high page rank are worth more than a large number from lower ranked sites. One way to explain the quality of back links is that having 10 back links from sites that have very high page rank (PR6-PR10) is worth more than 100 back links from lower ranked sites (PR1-PR2).
But don’t just focus on page rank of the sites where you get the links. In fact you should mix the sites you target for back links from sites of all page rank because some sites will improve their ranking while others may lose their ranking. Like a well-rounded investment plan you should spread your links around to sites from all levels.
It may not be easy to secure back links from high page rank websites but the rewards of getting those links will go a long way to help you improve page rank and get top search engine for your targeted keywords.

6This is very true about the importance of keywords and back links but I have to say that PR isn’t as important as some people make it out to be. There are tons and tons of sites that are PR 0 – 2 and they outrank PR 5 and 6′s for many keywords, of coarse PR tends to go hand in hand with keyword optimization and back links.

8Backlinks seem to be the most important aspect of SEO although certainly content does run a close second. Glad I found your site. Keep up the good work.
