Ever seen one of those web pages where every other word is the keyword that the page is targeted for? You know it reads something like “My ‘keyword’ page is about ‘keyword’ and if you don’t have any ‘keyword’ you need to buy some ‘keyword’. Totally, useless non-sensical waste of cyber space if you ask me. The good thing is, rarely will you see a trashy page like this get ranked when the page is abused from a keywod density perspective.
Keyword density refers to the percentage or ratio of instances that a particular keyword phrase occurs as a total percent of the other words on the page. For example, a web page with 250 words with the keyword phrase mentioned 5 times has a keyword density of 2%. That is almost the perfect range, as most SEO experts agree that the keyword density should never exceed 4%-5% of the page. If you get much higher than that, the search engines might view the page as SPAM and penalize not only that page, but maybe even the whole website.
The search engines need help to determine what your page or website is really all about, but a well written page with the targeted keyword sprinkled in a few times is really all you need, especially if the page has been optimized in other ways with the proper meta tags, headers, etc. You can also put your keywords in the url, for example as the title to a blog post.
